Hi Rose

That IS a katydid, probably the genus Macroxiphus. The long ovipositor is really something. It must lay eggs in the rubble of leaf axils, such as in palms.

I love Sabah and visit often. I've been to Danum Valley, Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Mt Kinabalu, Niah Caves. Labuan and other plces. I really like your blog. You have a wonderful country with spectacular things to see.

Have a look at my blog: http://www.bunyipco.blogspot.com/ for Queensland wildlife.

How did I miss this post? It looks like a grasshopper to me, but I don't know much about insects. It's a very interesting bug, and a very colorful one. The insects I see are always either green or brown.

Hi Dr. Dave,
Thank you for the information that you gave. It does help us who doesn't know much about insects. Actually when i see this katydid (as you said what is was), i was amazed by it's uniqueness. I haven't see something like this before. It's good to have an entomologist here and share the knowledge about this unknown insects with other nature lovers.

I did visit your blog and it is a very informative and interesting blog too.

Ratty--i think i am wrong about this insect...is katydid same as grasshopper? i don't think so. We have Dr. Dave helping us to get to know those insects better. Thanks to him.
